Excel Constructors to Build
the Kansas Bioscience Venture Accelerator In Olathe, Kansas
Overland Park, Kansas - December 08, 2009 - The Kansas Bioscience Authority and Excel Constructors broke
ground Friday, December 8th on the first building in the Kansas Bioscience Park in Olathe, Kansas.
The event, attended by state and local officials, marked the beginning phase of construction for the
Venture Accelerator building.
The Kansas Bioscience Park Venture Accelerator is an incubator for fledgling bioscience companies.
The building will serve as a bridge between innovation and long-term success as technology spins out of
research and development labs, into the marketplace.
The Venture Accelerator, which will lease incubator laboratory space to start-up bioscience businesses,
will be the first building at the 92-acre Kansas Bioscience Park site at College Boulevard between Lone Elm
Road and Kansas 7 Highway in Olathe.
Two-thirds of the 39,720-square-foot building is dedicated to incubator laboratory space, which will be leased to
small, start-up bioscience businesses. The building won't look like a typical laboratory facility; it's an architectural
piece that is scaled to achieve quality design, but also functionality. Although it will have laboratories, the building
is designed to hide features associated with research facilities such as large exhaust fans. It's also designed so each
side will be architecturally pleasing. Clouds, rain, sun and snow will change the building's appearance.
This project will be one of the most innovative research facilities in the country. It is designed with
"green" features, and it will be LEED Silver Certified, which is a measurement for environmental
sustainability standards.
